About Vence and Environs

Modern day Vence is a city of 15,000 people. The ancient city, which is a two-minute walk from Les Remparts, has curving cobblestone streets lined with residences, shops, bakeries, and a variety of excellent restaurants featuring Provencal cuisine in addition to Vietnamese, Chinese, and many other nationalities. Since Vence and its environs gained its independence from Italy in 1860, there are many fine pizza restaurants as well. Outside the ancient city is a fully functioning modern city with shops, a cinema, supermarkets, doctors, and whatever services one might need. Yet, even in the new part of the city, one finds a boule court where families play petanque as well as many lovely outdoor seating areas where people sit into the evenings. Regular outdoor markets occur weekly, with one day each week devoted to the Marche de puce (flea market). See the Helpful Hints for more information.
